Title: Google Earth
Post by: TerryW on October 09, 2007, 12:01:00 PM
I have been away for a week and I am just catching up on "things". I know I am a bit sad with my love of maps, but if you haven't seen the latest Google Earth, have a look as soon as you can. The detail of half of the Island is now in High Definition, especially Corfu Town.

Unfortunately the west side of the island has not yet been updated so Arilla is still a blur, but I would imagine this will change in the next release within the next six months.

Here is an example, showing the Airport.

Hi Sharon,

You can download the latest version here

http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html

Just click on "AGREE AND DOWNLOAD" and the file will start to download.

Put your own postcode in and see your house in 3D using the Tilt Feature.

Hi Terry

Been anywhere nice?

Just had a look on Google Earth again - found this a couple of months ago.  It doesn't seem to be up to date as everytime I look the same cars are parked outside my house and they are cars that we haven't got any more!

I did go somewhere nice Shuey, but not something that was planned. We went to my oldest sons house in Shropshire to help with some jobs. It was nice to help and lovely to spend time with the three grand children.

Hi Sharon,

Go to your Desktop > right click > select Properties > choose the Settings Tab.

You will see a screen like this

Move the slider control to a higher setting, possibly 1024 x 768.

More details here :- http://www.helpwithpcs.com/tipsandtricks/changing-screen-resolution-win-xp.htm

It could be that your PC doesn't have a Graphic Card that will give the higher resolution, in which case tell the boss that you need a new one.

If you like Google Earth, you will love this program that can be downloaded from the following web site  ....

http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/

You need a good quality graphics card to run it properly.

Terry,I use Google earth all the time at school, make things cross curricular as possible, reading a book set in S.Africa, so hey presto, off to Jo'burg. Great for the kids to see things as they are.
Will have a look at Corfu.
Also just downloading the wind thing - it's taking ages though.

Has anyone seen the UK "Street View" on Google Earth?

I think Sandy might be able to see her house and street in Southampton. Quite a few other cities have been covered and the photographs are really clear.

Something for Wegg to have fun with whilst Eggy is playing darts,

Sorry for being nerdy again, but I just love maps.

Thank heaven it will take a while before our little rural stone cottage is so clear! Might give me time to sort out the garden... The neighbours can put up with it, but I'd HATE the whole world to know how not-green my fingers have become!

Haven't tried to find Sandy's house on the map out of respect for her. But before long it will be the North beach in Arillas. Here is where Sandy goes with retsina and crocs, here is where Phil goes with absolutely nothing, here is....

Just hope I'm not resident at the time.

1984? Big Brother? I can't wait to move to Corfu. But that will make no difference either. What happened to privacy?

great topic Terry.

There is a good chance that your house is now viewable on Street View in Google Earth.

Just put in your postcode.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

QuoteIs this a good thing or a bad thing?

Mixed feelings about this question Terry. We looked at our house a couple of weeks ago & with the zoom function you could almost make out the furniture in our bedroom!!
Its good if you are looking a buy a house, so that you can see what the area is like, but it's probably good too for the professional thieves out there which is a bit worrying.

Tried it before Terry....Can't believe how close up you get to your front door and you can zoom in on windows etc.

I was actually leaving our avenue in the car when google came round filming (a 6 foot pole on a car with 4 cameras attached to the top). So you can see the back end of my car on it.

Frightening....lol

I do thinks its amazing to see "Street Views" like this and I can't wait to see Arillas on there. I love seeing places I have been to in Spain and  France on Street View it really helps to bring back memories

Have you seen the giant pliers above West Bromwich? see ... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/google/7473754/Google-Street-View-Giant-floating-pliers-above-the-sky-of-West-Bromwich.html

I was chuckling to myself after seeing mine so clearly, can you imagine anyone getting up to no good and their partner seeing someone else's car on their drive?! How would that be explained away!! I am NOT speaking from experience before you ask!! :-)

Amazing news, it looks as if Google are ready to start filming for Street View in Greece and as they are going from North to South, Corfu is first on the list.

Also Google are now filming manually so that they can get views of places inaccessible by car.

A good example is Warwick Castle where the camera was mounted on a bike as shown here....

And now, even more exciting, a video has been leaked of a trial on the jetty at Arillas. I am a member of a Google Earth forum and one of the people on there sent me the "leaked" video.

It will be great if  Arillas is one of the first places on Corfu to be added to Street View.

Here is the video, which I managed to copy and upload to Youtube. Its not very professional due to it being at the Beta stage

What fabulous news! Love watching the wobbly progression along the jetty and then the slow turn to see the view of sea-front buinesses. The number of times I have wobbled that exact path I can't recall.  Wonder I have never fallen in....

Would be a great addition to my "I'm not in Arillas" survival kit. Here's one justwaiting to see it.

Thanks again Terry
