Title: Jump in summer 2008 prices
Post by: JohnJ on October 06, 2007, 07:50:25 PM
Has anyone else noticed the huge jump in prices that the tour operators are asking for next year?  On May 14th 2007 we had two great weeks at Dyonisoss 2 with Manos at the rainbow pool for £586.  I have just been on the Manos site to book for next year and the same two weeks are now £812.  Thats an increase of £226 or 39%, how can they justify that.  And Thomas cook are even worse!!   I guess they think that the summer in the UK 2007 was that bad that we will pay any price to get away next year.   Well they will have to think again in my case.  We will wait until they find there are no takers and bring prices down.  What does anyone else think?
John

I totally agree with you. The prices have gone mad.  I always thought Early Bird booking was worth doing but it looks like it will be no different than leaving it later.

My pesonal feeling is that they know that libra are pulling out andknow that it will be differcult to get a package and that some people dont like to traval inderpendently, and that they will get what they are asking for. Viv

I totally agree, thomson seem to be putting their prices up every other week for the kaloudis. Ithink it is because arillas is becoming very well known.

We didn't go to Arillas this year (shame) so were last there in June 2006 staying at The Rainbow (travelled with Manos).
Have booked for June 2008, similar dates, same airport, same accomodation, same operator, only gone up by about £20.

Normaly go independently but have decided next year to get a package deal.  Staying at the Nifasaki (sorry about spelling) in september costing £530 for me Mick and Calum for 7 days.  Not sure if this is a good deal or not.  Can sometimes pay more than that for our flights only.

Hi JohnJ,

Have you tried phoning Manos? We have booked again for next year (see my post under
http://www.arillas.com/page/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,165/topic,2585.msg27881) and the price is exactly the same.If you phone they can give you a discount as a returning customer.
It may be worth trying.

thanks
Mike

Up until now there have been four major players in the Tour Ops business controlling at least 90% of the market. Obviously a lot of people do not like this but against contrary opinion it does generate revenue for the locals and it gets people on holiday who are otherwise cannot afford or to scared to travel on their own..... I digress. The big four were:

Thomas Cook
Airtours (My Travel)
First Choice
TUI (Thompson)

As of Summer 2008 your list will look like this:

Thomas Cook
TUI

With the many threats from independent travel and low cast airlines these companies have had to merge to survive. This process is still ongoing and will continue to until Match 2008 when all the legal mumbo jumbo is satisfied. In the long run you will probably find better prices as the two companies have a bigger back catalogue, however at present we are in an uncertain time with plenty of confusion added in, I'm sure we all know what happens to prices at such times. Two companies that are now one still have to sell and operate as separate entities even though they are one big whole, it confuses me, it no doubt confuses you and it confuses the computers, the computers set the price and when they get scared they go for the easiest option (static/highest price).

I sometimes joke over things in this forum but unfortunately I think Summer 2008 is going to be messy, don't say I didn't warn you...........

Thanks for that posting, Joe - as always very informative!!  I've tried a few places without success for next year - Manos apparently has nothing available for the whole of July and August to Arillas!  I'm going to forget about it for now and leave until next year when hopefully things may be a bit clearer!  PS did you have a nice week with your mates then?  Did they like Arillas?

Fireblade,is the third person in the room a child? If so then it may be worth asking who ever booked it for you to recheck price but puttting in 3 adults.Sometimes works out cheaper.I always do that when pricing self catering accommodation.

Thanks Jen for the advice, but the problem is we never paid this for the last two times we stayed at the Mirage, so why now? But that makes sense to book third adult!

As I mentioned further up the thread prices are at the maximum at the moment and this is unusual. Normally you will look at a brochure and then book you holiday, you however very rarely pay this maximum or static price you normally pay a fluid price which is market driven. Summer 2008 is going to be an all new one so with no market to compare it against the prices are naturally inflated.

Its not that the prices have gone up, its that none of the usual discounts are being applied. If I am honest this will probaly be the case until Summer 2009 unless sales are bad which so far they have not been.

Also there does seem to be a bug with the Mirage on Thomascook.com if you want this property actually call us or head into a Travel Agent don't book online it seems to only return results when you book for 3 people.
