Hello, I know there is a lot on here about mozzies but I'm trying to find out if they are as bad in October as during the summer. Does anybody know? I need to get my daughter on piriton before we go if they are still a big problem at this time of year.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
HI,Cheryl, sorry have no idea how bad they are in oct.I'm sure somebody who has been in Oct,Will let you Know Soon.Have a great Holiday.
Hi
I've just returned from Alykes on Zante (needed a Sunday flight) and only got a couple of bites. I normally get bitten++. Apparently Alykes is usually overrun with mosquitos, so although its not Corfu I should imagine you would be OK.
I actually bought a Bite Zapper from Superdrug and used that with good effect. I am not sure exactly how it works but I usually have to take antihistamine tablets and use hydrocortisone cream but the bites I zapped did not swell or become itchy. Probably worth a go if you get local allergic reactions to bites. If you do get one to try let me know if it works for you.
Thank you both for your replies. Out of the three of us, it's only my daughter who gets bitten - which seems to be the case with most families. I'll buy one of those zapper things and will let you know if she needs it!
they were realy bad in september i would start the piriton asap get some garlic tablest and vit b1 take them before you go and while your there i found out the tea tree oil takes the stick away but it doesn't wor for all it worked for e and my mum. you can get this at superdrug or wilkos its called tea tree oil spot stick but the it doesnt just work for spots try luv little miss
Thanks, little miss! Will get her on Piriton today and buy one of those tea tree things! It was the itching that 'did her head in'!! Hopefully, she'll not suffer too much if I also buy the zapper thing suggested.
it helps i hate the itching we all got bite more this year than before and we usually go early summer but went late this year. id try anything that help it worth it. try stay away from the restaurants with trees and flowers around them. hope you have a nice Holiday luv little miss
Thank you so much! I'm sure we'll have a great time!

Hi Cheryl
You don't actually say how old your daughter is but as well as piriton try some hydrocortisone 1% cream (available over the counter in chemists). Hydrocortisone is a steroid cream and is an antiinflammatory. It stops the itching and therefore the histamine (allergic response) in the body. Scratching the bite causes more histamine release in the body which in turn causes more itching- a vicious cycle. I know you may be reluctant to use a steroid cream on your daughter but children with eczema are treated with steroids in much higher doses, it is safe to use short term.
She's almost 18 so not a child at all really!! I'll get some because she's a bugger for scratching! Bet you now, when I get all this stuff she doesn't get one bite! Thanks again!
u can never stop the bites but you can the itching also in asda they have some bands that repel mozzies im not sure of the name as i no longer have them my mum does but everything is worth try at least once, it wirks for some but no others but its worth a try have a good hoilday luv little miss
just got back from arillas about 2 hours ago and we both got eaten alive you need to take all possible precautions but above all else don't let the mozzies spoil your holiday we had a fantastic time and we will booking to return next year we stayed at the Kaloudis village i will be writing all about that in another topic
Cheers Steve - thanks for info and glad you had a good time! My turn next week!
Have a great holiday Cheryl. Very jealous!!Who are you going with? Are you married?
Hi we also got back last night. Couldnt believe how many mossies were waiting to attack while we were boarding the plane. Must have got an extra 6 bites easily. The Pilot even commented on the extra unwelcome passengers he was carrying back to Newcastle. Mick thought he was so clever not getting any bites during the week but they did catch up with him at the airport.
Never mind its all worth it for a week in our favourite place, countdown now on till May.
Jill
we went 11th sept
i didnt see many mossies but loads of wasps
i didnt get bit and my hubby didnt either
im so glad
hopefull in may it will be the same
fingers crossed
sue you must of been one of the lucky ones we was there from the 4th to the 18th of september and all of us were bit and lots of people we meet was just as bad luv little miss
The Arillas Mozzie is now getting smarter! - I believe they have now learnt that buzzing before a strike can severely damage their lifespan. They have also taking to climbing as well as flying. How else can you be stung just above the knee in the evening when wearing long trousers? I think they use the hairs on your legs as rungs of a ladder climb up, feast as then freefall back down. They have also been "working out" down the local Mozzie Gym to strenthen their stabber. How else do they get through socks?
Or do they attack us during the day as well ? - Perhaps there are other little "Bitey Things" we don't know about.
So don't go out in the evening in shorts & T.Shirt or strapless dress. This applies to the ladies as well.
You may look good but you're a walking meal.
Change your perfume or after shave for a good mozzie repellent and wear light clothing. Use repellants during the day. Mix it with sun tan lotion.
Regards the Wasps. A little annoying but I don't think they are as annoying as the English ones. I did not meet anyone who had been stung by one. Maybe Greek Wasps are a little more laid back.
" Shall we sting anyone today?? - Nah let's do it tomorrow."
We've just come back from Arillas by the way and I'm still scratching my neck courtesy of the mozzie that caught me while I was boarding the plane. Probably revenge as he noticed I'd wacked most of his family going up the steps.
Regards
Negg
Negg,
That was sooo funny. It's so good to have a laugh on a dreich day like today. :-)
Maybe next time you could try shaving your legs to stop them climbing up your trouser legs! :o
Eileenx
Eileen I shaved my legs and the little blighters still managed to climb up and bite the tops of my legs.
There are little black flies which I refer to as the ankle biters, the mark they leave looks just like a mosquito bite and there are always loads of them around the beach.
I put a jumper on today to try and stop myself scratching the bites on the tops of my arms that I also received while boarding the plane but it hasn't worked. I can feel the huge lumps under my jumper and the jumper is irritating them, why do they stay itchy so long
Jill
Negg - loved your post, made me giggle!!
Talking of gnat bites, i have been bitten 6 times in various places on Monday night whilst asleep, and that was in Essex!!! I reckon because the weather has been so mild theyre hanging around, but its annoying because the whole summer i never got one and none in Spain either and then mid October i get 6!!!!!!!! Whats all that about i ask you??!!
Negg you post was so funny , nothing seems to work for me i just seem to be a permanent mossie attractant and they take months to heal , hubby said im like a dot to dot book
Makes me laugh. Every year spend a fortune at Duty Free on my new 'holiday' perfume then end up with 'eau de Autan' every night!
negg that post made me laugh i had to read it twice and then show my mum to check i wasn't seeing thing thanks for a laugh luv little miss
Back at work now - got home last night! Had a brill time and am a very grumpy bunny today! I hate work!
Well, you were all right - they were as bad as ever. I bought everything I could - suncream and aftersun with it in, some spray thing that was 50% deet, a zapper (but that got used more by my son to make me jump - what is in them things???) Once again, only my daughter got bitten and she says that they've stopped buzzing too cos she got two bites on her eyelid! Me thinks if she'd got up a bit earlier she would have been ok! They didn't manage to spoil anything though they tried very hard!
Jo - I'm divorced and have been happily travelling with only my two young uns (17 and 14 now!!) for years. Best holiday buddies I've ever had!
Just like to say we were in Arillas 4-18 September and not only did we get bitten by mozzies I also got stung by a wasp when we were on the moped. We took all the precautions wrist band ,b1 and sprays and creams and plugs for the room and still the buggers got us!!
Neggy's posting was very funny, he is very clever with words me thinks!
Now I know why I had so many around my legs this year, the worst ever I have been bitten in going to Greece. It must be the 'ankle biters', in the sand. Dont know what to do about them for next year, any ideas?
I havent a clue either, do you think they'll be as bad at the beginning of the season??
Also have you ever wondered why Greek people dont get bit, whats their secret??!
Hi. There are mozzies in October! I hope Viv`s having a good Birthday, as I am about to have an ouzo on her behalf! We are sitting in Brouklis, and have just had a lovely stuffed pork roll, white wine and sweet to come. So I am doing my best Viv. The weather has been fab, and the hospitality in Arillas A1 as always. Look forward to seeing you all next time in Arillas. We only booked a flight on Sunday 10 pm, arrived here about 5pm Monday. Bfn and will be in touch again soon. Lindypops. p.s. Bottoms up Viv xx
Mozzies..ohhh yes having just returned I observed some mighty bites..but as we all know they are selective in choosing who they latch on to..Also there are certain flies, particularly a small beast with a brown & greenish body that can also bite! as my wife can testify...(A small price to pay).....nice to have a running commentry on life as it goes on in Arillas.
How brilliant is that! Sitting in the Brouklis eating a fabulous meal and keeping in touch with everyone here. The Wonders of Technology! I am so envious that Lindypops got a last minute flight and got there the next day. Amazing!
Thanks Lindypops, Wish we could be with you. Viv
My Grandson got a bite/sting from a red coloured fly while he was playing in the beach. His finger swelled and it was quite painful. Never seen this kind of fly before
Well back and sorry not to reply earlier. Flight £44 each etc, and had all the usual ups n downs in Arillas. I was set on going, so the price didn`t really matter. We had a good third time in Arillas this year, and some very acceptable venues, some not. Mozzies love me, so I will have to take my repellant next time. It`s the only way I don`t get bitten. As always, we met some lovely people, and enjoyed their company. Sorry to say that Vavillas wasn`t open, but maybe next time. Happy hols all.
Not sure what the real reason is, we've been told it was either political or environmental but the usual spraying to kill the Mozzies in north east Corfu was not carried out until very very late in the season this year leading to much higher volumes than normal during July & August.
