Hi Truth
This is an example of two methods suggested for policing the rules as reported in another press story, as you say this is Greece:

Electronic reporting systems will be installed near beaches so people can report any violations by beachfront businesses - drone inspections will also be carried out.

The drones will be used to take nice videos for tourism and no ones grassing the beachfront taverna's up 😁🤣

Hi
Not Arillas thankfully

Apart from the new rules Mystique Beach in Skiathos now charge 100 euro for two beds and a brolly per day.
The cost breakdown is £30 euro for the beds and brolley and the other 70 euro has to be spent in the taverna.

Some beaches are charging a sliding scale of charges for beds. Front row can be up to 50 euro reducing the further you are away from the sea

On the webcam there appears to be fewer beds on the beach this year. Also I am guessing due to the reduced beach size & Pedro's retirement.
Looks like there will be more folks buying brollies & loungers for the beach & I expect the beds around pools will be in demand too.

Hi
With sun beds prices as high as 50 euro + on some ''in'' beaches,I asked on the beach we use, that charge 12 euro, what the official fixed price is.

Was told that the maximum that can be charged is 12 euro. The ones that over charge get fined sometimes, but they carry on overcharging and pay the fines as it's still financially viable

Charge wot U like. Pay the fine.... Greeks Government smiles.
It is not in their interest to stamp down on these "Sunbed Scammers!!"

To strickly enforce the rules is not financially viable

As much as I need a sunbed for my achy bones I think Arillas was getting far too crowded with sunbeds especially near Ammos. He no idea why people would want to be packed in like sardines with no privacy.

When we first started doing back in 1996 I remember there being 1 row on the entire beach and it was like paradise!

Earlier in this thread Harold mentioned that preparations were underway on the North Beach, last September there was no sand and very difficult access, I wonder if it will be usable this year ? Having said that the South beach was much bigger and easy to get to.....I wonder if some enterprising operator will apply for a bed license there ?

Christina has some sunbeds out on the North beach and there is much more sand than last year and improving every day I have been told.

There is a distinct lack of sunbeds on the main beach but have seen Pedro's who said  been told that someone has bought his business but the paperwork is holding things up.

It is very strange to see no beds at the south end & a shame as most of the beach has landed there this year. Beds outside Inas are €14 a set with a free bottle of water. Horizon beds are all reserved for their guests. Some beds in front of Thalassa & The Marina. Ammos & portofino have their beds out but not as many as usual. The beach is narrower here & tapers to nothing but a thin stony strip in front of Marinaki. It's sad to see all their beds piled up by their apartments.
We still prefer Dimitri's beds & he has 2 rows on the first section & another row past the cliff. Anyone heading for the beds on the naturist north beach will have to be prepared to wade through the waters. A bit tricky yesterday with a choppy sea x

Hi

I just read your post Karen & Colin €14 for sunbeds if you are there for two weeks and like the beach and do no trips that works out at €196 that is a big lump out of the beer funds
What did we do before sunbeds a beach towel laid out on the sand and that was fine back in the day I am not overly keen on sunbeds
But now it's all luxurious sunbeds
When we was in Sri Lanka the pool attendant would put a thick mattress and give you two very large towels each sunbeds free and on the beaches
When we are in the marina pool Arillas we get sunbeds but I spend most of the time in the pool or walking about I am not the one to spend all day on a sunbed
We all have our opinions it's like marmite you love it or loathe it

Hi
Has the silly price for sunbeds reached Arillas?

Val tells me on a FB forum that a new arrival yesterday was told beds were 35 euro for the front row and 25 euro for the second row. Did not say which beds.
Any truth

Loads of sunbeds on the beach, which is very wide this year. Most charge 15 euros for two beds and a brolly but I'm told Ammos is charging 35 euros for a front row position!!

Hi
Why 35€ I know people will pay it. Lot of the older person can not afford that sort of price go for the 15€ ones or the marina 0€ just buy your drinks
Or on the beach like the old days use your towels 0€ 😂😂

Its crazy.... I know prices have to go up but come on..... lets play fair !!! I don't think I'd use Ammos beds if they paid me E35 to be honest. Personal opinion but anyone can feel free to destroy me for voicing it

Hi
Heaven forbid, it can cause confrontations.Never seen this in Arillas but in Skiathos where the cost can be up to 70 euro, its a problem.

No problem on the North Beach . Kristina sorts it out very effectively. She just shouts at them and waves her arms about

Beds are back in front of the Gratsela, the old spot Petra's used to run. Better distance apart from others on the beach, and 15 euros, but may charge 10 if George thinks it will be too windy in the afternoon. He does boats also.

I have kept very quiet on the "Sunbed Situation" probably because my alcohol intake has not begged me to say what I really feel.

My first thoughts are why do I bother to take Winter Pics of the Beach as when you arrive, in the Summer, you cannot see the beach for sunbeds??? !!!
Very bloody sad and does nothing to attract new faces to Arillas who maybe like their afternoons on the beach , cost free , and then spend those extra euros in Tavernas.
and..bugger you may get arrested!!! . don't put yer towels or beachmat close to those beds or you will be asked to move.
(Can they do that legally??? - A question for the Boss)

A pessimist might say that people have taken their holidays to Sidari , Ag Stephonas or Ag George. Plenty of beach and Sidari offers free sunbeds for customers.
eg.. A family of four, with a few beers , in Sidari gets freebies!! - and they will probably be back for the evening meal so freebies the next day.
(30e saved on beds goes a long way towards the cost of the evening meal)

St George and Stephanos have so much beach that a few mats/towels do not interere with anyone.

I happen to know some Arillas guys who have moved elsewhere but because of their Arillas pals make those evening visits to their favourite local haunts. Loyalty to good friends and good food with that excellant company means a lot.

But for example.. A family of four staying in Sidari for one week can save e200 for the bed/brolly hire
Makes sense to me....but bear in mind I post this as a pessimist

My personal veiw is.... Time to shake up Guys. Keep yer customers here and don't shoo 'em away. For every one customer you get you lose three and one of those will be somewhere else next year.

I have walked up n down the beach twice in the last week and found about 30% occupancy on these beds with just a small section of spare beach for those towels and mats....
..... which reminds me of the Titanic. "3rd Class Passengers here only!!"
Wot 'appened to most of them??

Cheers Negg

I'm with EVERYTHING you say there mate!
We never hire any but always interested in the price of them.
I suppose the people that rent beach purely to rent sunbeds from would struggle if tavernas had theres for free, thats the only downside.
We were in Portugal in May and lay on sunbeds behind a small rope which were free to use from a beach bar. Step over the rope and use the beds there and it was 15 euro. I could never get my head around it..... just buy drinks from the bar and use their's for free but people still paid the 15 euros!

Hi
Make hay while the sunshines comes to mind.

As I understand it all beaches in Greece are owned by the government and free access must be given to the public.
Bed licences are issued and charged by central government and they regulate the price to be charged, which I was told last year was 17 euro for two beds and a brolly

The fines that can be imposed  are relatively  small. Its still more profitable to pay the fine and carry on as before.
