Title: Akrotiri
Post by: Linsey on August 16, 2011, 11:57:49 AM
Hello, am due to return to Arillas in a few weeks time but this time with baby in tow. Was wondering how easy access to Akrotiri would be with a buggy? If it's not possible then we will go as a tag team - knew asking Gran and Papa along would be useful!
Thanks,

Linsey

as long as you have a sturdy buggy you should be ok ,,but remember it is a dirt track,,or go via the road to san steph, then only a short bumpy track to niko,s ,,,,,,,yammas

Hi Linsey,

You could just about do it with a buggy but I wouldn't do it, as baby would have a very bumpy ride. You would have a few nasty places to pass on the cliff walk, where its eroding away, and the stones on the track to Akrotiri are quite large. I would also be very very cautious if you carry the baby, especially on the walk back down to Arillas, as the steep parts are very dusty and slippery.

Thanks Terry - I thought that might be the case. I think we would maybe be best to go on two separate trips. After a few days with us my mum and dad might be scrambling up that cliff path every day to escape us!

Hi Linsey,

Long before Arkortiri was built we walked that route many times pushing a buggy, I'd agree the beginning of the cliff path would be unsuitable now but it's a shame not to visit Akrotiri/Ag.Steph as a family group.  Dimitris has posted a photo showing a route which cuts out the dangerous section of the cliff path.  The route begins up the lane from Eftihia, then up and around Panorama villas and then across a field.  I have had a look for the link but cannot find it, perhaps someone else will have better luck.

Eileen.

It's here :-

There is an aerial photo attached to Dimitri's post on May 23rd 2011 which shows the route.

Isn't this forum amazing. Eileen answers a question but can't find a link to a photo. Only 10 minutes later Geoff finds the missing link. How good is that?

Geoff there was another link which I remember Viv posted (doh...again I couldn't find it!).  I seem to remember it was an aerial view with the walking route outlined and highlighted.

I agree Terry, this forum is amazing...is there another forum out there with so much information available for such a small location?  It all helps people make a correct and well informed choice for their well earned holiday destination. :-)

Ness...it truly depends on the time of year.  Spring time and Autumn when it's a little cooler it only takes about 15 minute slow stroll, but in the heat of summer...

The Gravia bar is nice and handy for a refreshing stop off on the way should you need a pick me up :-)

It was Dimitris who posted it - scroll further down the link that Geoff posted and you will find it. It's an aerial photo with the route highlighted. Very tempted, but I'd never get Jen that far.

Eileen - I THINK Vivs post was a reference to the same one that I mentioned below.
And it takes you HOW LONG - 15 Minutes !!! ??? - Crikey, you must be a marathon runner, no way I can do it in less than about 35. And now that Akrotiri is on the summit it usually takes me about FIVE HOURS!!! :-) lol
For more info on walks take a look at these 3 old threads :

http://www.arillas.com/forum/index.php/topic,2312.msg81221/topicseen.html#msg81221

The last one has some stunning photos taken on the San Steph walk by Sara.

Phil - Come On - we both know that the furthest you walk is back to your room from the 'nut - and I use the term "Walk" very loosely ;-) lol

I must be missing something...lol...no comments please Geoff...this is what I see on your link...it's not the image I'm referring too... http://www.arillas.com/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=308

LOL...Geoff is that 35 mins from Dafni ;-)...seriously, perhaps I am a fast walker but I always think it's a difficult question to answer.  It's not far to Akrotiri, but so much depends on fitness level, whether strolling or on a mission(!) and the weather.  I guess I'm always on a mission.....

Thanks for all the memories George. Some lovely posts in those threads.

It would take me much longer to get to Akrotiri from Eftihia's. With pit stops at Thetis Palace and Gravia Bar, I reckon a good couple of hours if I were hurrying. And I'd be on my own, so not a likely scenario... Ha Ha Eileen - I'm never on a mission when I'm there.

Thanks again folks
Phil

Sorry Eileen - can't resist the opportunity - We ALL KNOW that you are missing SOMETHING !!! ;-) lol
Yes, that picture is the first posting by Dimitris on the link that I posted, but if you read through all the other posts you will see that Dimitris has made a second post on May 23rd which includes the aerial photo with the route marked out
???
Should've gone to Specsavers :-) :-) :-)

Thanks Geoff...lol...found it now...took me long enough and that's with my NEW specs on!

Now safely stored in my favourites :-)

Sorry for all the confusion folks...

Thanks everyone for the information and advice. I think I know the road on the map as we often walked the back way form the Mathraki down to the beach front. I think we'll see what the temp is like when we are there - mind you we can all have a shot at pushing the buggy!

Can't wait as this wasn't open the last time we visited.

thanks again,

Linsey, Drew and Faye xx

Hi,

I did the walk quite a few times last week, both via the road & the donkey track. I would agree that it probably wouldn't be suitable for a buggy, but i would also urge as many people as possible to make the trek because it really is worth it. Make sure you go up onto the roof for the fantastic view it gives you of Arillas & San Stef. I used to walk up the road way, & down the donkey track, took about 15-20 mins up, & 10 mins down.

This German TV program ends at Akrotiri. Great stuff for Nikos

Just wish I could speak fluent German.
It was lovely to see Litsa and little Spiros as TV stars.

We have some photos of Spiros taken in Brouklis and he is wearing the very same outfit.
He is such a beautiful little boy, with a wonderful Mummy.
(OK his Daddy is wonderful too). ;) ;)

My internet connection at home is slow, and the buffering must have by-passed the part with Litsa and Spiros, so it was a nice surprise when I watched it at work this morning. I need to get the video translated now so that sub-titles are shown.

Terry try and look at it again, Spiros and Litsa, Spiiros at the brewery, Kostos at Olive Wood (havent been for about 2 yrs mudt try in October) and a few more locals that Christina passes see if you can put names to any of them, you must know the place well. Ofcourse as you say it was lovely to end up at Akrotiri.

Did recognize Litsa and Spiros second viewing. The flash caption though gives her surname as different to Dimitris. My German is very limited, but did understand some of it.
I have a very fast internet connection with virgin media of 30 gig. or whatever (me not technical) but seems something happened to the site recently as when I have been  to my bookmark and selected Arillas.com, it's come with 'error', and loads of rubbish. I've had to delete the original 'bookmark' and re instate the home page, anyone else had any problems?
Great 'plug' for Nikos and Akrotiri!
Yammas,
Martin.

Martin - I had the same problem with my bookmarking the Arillas.com site, also with the one on my ipod.  Normal service now resumed!

I watched the German video as well (through Facebook) and, even though I don't speak German, enjoyed it thoroughly.  I recognised Litsa and Spiros - what a good looking family - I don't know what happens in Corfu/Greece when a woman marries - does she adopt her husband's name or not?  Whatever, Goudelis is Nikos' surname ...  although I believe there are other Goudelis surnames in Arillas that are NOT related (Giorgios from Malibu being one of them)

In the past, women would change their surname when married, to that of their husband (again in genitive case) signifying the transfer of "dependence" from the father to the husband. In earlier Modern Greek society, women were named with -aina as a feminine suffix on the husband's first name: for example "Giorgaina" or "Wife of George". Nowadays, a woman's surname does not change upon marriage, though she can use the husband's surname socially. Children usually receive the paternal surname, though there are cases where children receive the maternal surname in addition or exclusively.[3]
In official documents, the father's name in the Genitive will be inserted between a person's first and last names. For example, if John Papadopoulos has a daughter named Mary and a son named Andrew, they will be referred to as María Ioánnou Papadopoúlou and Andréas Ioánnou Papadópoulos. When Mary marries George Demetriádes, she may retain her original name or choose to be called María Geōrgíou Demetriádou. If she is widowed, she will revert to her father's patronymic but retain her husband's surname: María Ioánnou Demetriádou.

Thanks for the quote viv. Jen and me sat and debated the "married name" thing yesterday (in truth no debate - we just agreed.) A married woman has no obligation in UK to take or use her husband's surname, but most do. And whatever the custom in Greece, we respect it.

I just loved watching little Spiros and his mum in the film. In fact I rewound and watched it twice, and then again with Jen. I thought it might have been when he had an ear infection earlier in the year. Didn't even have the sound on because in German I might have got one word but not many more. It was a lovely video to watch, and thanks again to Terry for finding it and sharing it.
