Loss of this machine is Arillas is very short sighted by the powers that be.
( Pillicks springs to mind , but I can't say that )

They said it wasn't used enough but it was out of order most of the Winter!

There is one is Agious Stephanos but it only gets filled once a week so is, usually, out of use after a couple of days. Both the Eurobank and Alpha  Bank ones in Sidari were defunct last week There is also one outside the Chemist in Avliotes.
( This was OK yesterday - Eggy got lucky )

Cheers
Negg

We are having efforts for a new ATM at the same place where the previous was.
An new bank  called "ProBank" has confirmed that they are going to place one in Arillas but they did not say WHEN....  I hope it will be soon.

We will keep you updated under this topic

Knowing that Sally wasn't going with you on Friday, I thought it would be a good chance for Pete to have a break as well, but he wouldn't come. I would have left me at home.lol. Enjoy your break Harold. Love Viv

Good grief, the powers that be, common sense. Did I hear right? Its excellent news and as I said, surely these things are not there just to make money, but to serve the customers who fund these banks. Anyway, well done ProBank. lets hope its soon for all the long term residents and the summer guests.

hope it will be back soon.we tend to use the one in agros near the t junction, but have to be careful with petrol now and try to make it last.1.59/litre average
Title: Re: Cash Machine
Post by: TerryW on May 13, 2010, 01:39:20 PM
Quote1.59/litre average

So €1.59 (at 1.15 €/£)  = £1.38/litre = £6.29 per Gal

Gasp!!!! ......... and we thought it was expensive here in the UK

It cost a lot to get cash here now........

We met some people last week in Arillas who were quite put out as they said the brochure stated there was a cash machine so had brought no Travellers cheques. They were going to walk over to Agios Stefanos but were not 'walkers' and not looking forward to it.

We later found that the ATM in San Stef at the Thomas Bay Hotel was  not working so they were not going to be pleased !  The hotel receptionist said it might be a week or 2 before the Bank fixed it.

If you have a car and are out travelling there is an ATM in the centre of Agros (on way to Troumbeta and Corfu town) almost opposite the junction by the pharmacy. It is working and had money in yesterday.

Hello can any one help and let us  regular users of the ATM know if there is any update on the Cash machine is it in or are Arillas still without?
Still be there in September no matter what! Just be nice to be able to plan the old stash of cash!

Does anyone have an idea of the commission charged locally for changing Euro Travellers Cheques?

Don't know whether to take Euro at the UK exchange rate, plus commission in Arillas, or pay 1.5% commission on Sterling Travellers Cheques plus exchange commission in Arillas to get a better rate. Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrgh!

Bring back the ATM! It was so easy then!!!!!!!

Phil why dont you take Euros? Then you save all the hassle of changing and commission etc.. Yes its a risk incase you lose it all but I begrudge seeing all my hard earned holiday money being frittered on commission.  From memory I think its about 2%

Is it worth checking travel insurance for level of cover b4 taking all that cash!!
Am in the same boat and dont know what to do for the best!
Regards, Pat.
PS: Phil, see you on your last day hopefully!

Pat, you probably will - since EasyJet changed our flights, we are now in town until about 9pm on 26th. That's if we ever leave.....

Take care. See you then.

Thanks Jo. We were hoping not to have a mass of cash to worry about, but might yet. Will bring a few days worth in cash, but the one thing we will avoid is losing a precious day to a cash run to SanStef or Sidari. If we had a month or more, then OK. But two weeks for us is the lowest limit.

Your turn soon....
Phil

We always take 3 to 4 days worth of Euros, 2 to 3 days worth of sterling (cash), and the rest in Euro travellers cheques (with debit cards and Credit cards for 'just in case').  Most of the businesses will change cheques , or take them and / or cards as payment so it's never really a problem . Ok, they might take a bit of commission but I think it's worth every penny if it saves me trekking around north-west Corfu for half a day looking for a cash machine!
It would still be useful to have an ATM back in Arillas 'tho.

Just got back today, make sure that you only take the new £20 notes, the older ones are not now changed, this was from Olga. Got 1.20 to £. Mick

We were told the same about £20 notes from the travel office on the other side of the road (sorry can't recall the name) but they also told us that they have been advised to no longer accept £10 notes and asked us if the UK were getting rid of them!  So beware - only take £20 notes (new ones) and above.

We took quite a lot of sterling with us and got a good rate in Arillas - about 1.18 when we were there a couple of weeks ago - but they do take 2% commission - I was advised it is the same rate everywhere.  At the same time we were offered around 1.12 and no commission in M&S and Tesco.

This Travel Money calculator is quite a useful tool...
http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/holiday-money

FairFx currency card are very currently offering 1.20 euros with a flat fee of 1.50euro for withdrawals.  Not any good if you don't have transport to the nearest cash machine :-(

You all know my feelings about the removal of the ATM, but I would advise that anyone coming to Arillas this summer should either bring euros with them, or some sterling to cash here. We went to Sidari for cash today, and all % ATMs were closed. (empty)....
We had to travel to Acharavi for our money!!!!!!

And the petrol is back up to 1.58. I am not a happy bunny.........

For those wanting to know the old notes that are no longer legal after June 30 have a pic of Edward Elgar on the reverse the new ones have Adam Smith on them.Just checked all ours before we set off for our annual trip back to Arillas tonight,we have about 750euros which normally lasts just over week so will be searching for an ATM thereafter anyone recommend the most likely one to be working.

The ATM  outside Dimitris/Markato Supermarket, in Acharavi has never let us down.
But..... you just have to get there, ( About 20 mins from Arillas by car )

The one outside the Chemist in Avliotes is also supposed to be reliable.
