Title: Mosquitoes and tennis!
Post by: blazeboy on June 15, 2011, 02:44:36 AM
Hi
We are a group of 5 who are heading to Arillas, our 1st visit, on 4th Jul staying at Bardis studios. Have been reading the forum and can't wait to arrive. You all make the place sound ideal for us. Bring on the Mythos and the sun.
A few questions from the group - is there a problem with mossies?
is there a tennis court nearby open to the public?
                                                   are there any pub quizzes?
My husband and friend like to play tennis and are keen to find a court. I think they are crazy - why play tennis when there are sunbeds, books and beer! We also enjoy the odd pub quiz - as long as it's not too hard.

Thanking you for your replies.
Karen

Hello,
Mozzies can be a problem, make sure that you purchase jungle formula with the ingredient Deet and you should be fine. To be extra safe a plug in repellent for your room and citronella candles for balcony are great both of those 2 available cheaply in shops in Arillas..but get yr jungle formula here to take with you.
If you like a quiz the Kaloudis hotel hosts one in the pool bar on Thursday nights, great fun.
Tennis courts I am afraid I cannot help you with but feel sure someone else on the forum will come up with something...just sounds too exhausting to me.
Know that you will have an amazing time, if you have lots of energy to expend there are some lovely walks.

Welcome luvverrs and m8s, forget about tennis. Somebody might disagree, but watch Wimbledon first. Then come to Arillas. Have a sweet strawberry and a glass of Bollinger before you come - neither mean anything at home in Arillas. I love both dearly but I prefer Mythos and mezes.

Welcome to the mad house, the forum. Mozzies are an issue  - cover ankles with 50% DEET, Boots Jungle Formula,  or get bitten alive. Take yer pick. In truth it is the vital issue for Jen. The little darlings never touch me.

Pub quizzes? Try Billy at Kaloudis - it can be hilarious. The first prize is a day shopping in Corfu Town. The booby prize for me would be two days.  Sometimes the Rainbow do one. Once won it.

If you really want to enjoy Arillas just smile to everyone. Say hello and be open. That is the culture. That is the place. I love it and hope you do.

There is a tennis court at the Hotel Marvel - well, there always used to be. I don't know if it's open to the publuc - there is probably little demand in hot weather. However, if you are really keen, you could always ask if you can use it....you never know........it was certainly never busy except for one year when the hotel was used mostly by Czech tourists. They used to do some sort of exercise/meditation on the court early in the morning.

Ger, that's weird, you and I fight the mossies in exactly the same way.

Do you think we might be related?

Hi Blazeboy

Lucky you going to Bardis Sun Studios - they are such a lovely family, the pool is wonderful and the rooms simple and clean.  You can pay Poppy extra for air con and, although quite expensive, to my mind it is worth it as it keeps the mossies at bay at night.  I use Boots Tropical Wipes in the evenings (partic. ankles and wrists) and have little problem.  have a great time - I shall be at Bardis for three weeks in August.

Hi
Thanks for your prompt replies.
Will pass on info re tennis courts and quizzes.

I sometimes have a problem with mossies so will try some of your tips. I did try avon skin so soft last year with so-so results, but I did read somewhere that the formula has been. Not sure how true that is.

Checking out the forum daily for hints and tips to fully enjoy our holiday. Bardis sounds a great place to stay.

Counting down the days til we arrive in Arillas.

Thanks Karen

Whatever the environmental implications it Is DEET which keeps you from ankles covered in bites. Have seen so many holidays ruined by the mozzies including my Jen's. Boots Jungle Strength or anything with 50%DEET. So sad for those who can't use it.

Worthy mate, if I had to use socks I wouldn't be in Arillas. Socks are reserved for other places. Like Benidorm. Sandals and socks.... How do you spell urghhhhhh?

Like undergarments I don't if I can possibly avoid.

just make Arillas understand that Somerset produces people like you and me. Our reputation is in doubt. Eggy and Weggy justprove it.

Have a great time. See you soon probably...

Hi, we will be at the Bardis Sun studios from June 29th to 15th July. I am hoping that I will be able to fit a few clothes in the case around all my mossie repellant as this year I am taking no risks. I was eaten alive last year. I would attach a photo if I knew how buts its not a pretty sight anyway. This year I have been eating marmite, taking vitamin B capsules and garlic capsules and I've got skin so soft, deet and lemon shower gel. I am hoping that with all that there will be one big mossie free area around me.

I'm not sure if it is available in the shops. I got mine from my local Avon rep. You could look on line.

www.ecobeautyshop.com do citronella shower gel and shampoo. Both of us found them quite effective at detering the little sods.

Take one of those plug in thingys for repelling mozzies in the room, we spent our first night in May swotting the little so and so's! Next day bought a Mr Fist plug in and tablets from Vavilas(?) market, just opposite road to San Stef, and no problems in room after that.
There is a quiz night on Friday and Sunday nights at Thomas Bay hotel in San Stef. During our week we won them both.... bit embarassing really, when we were staying in Arillas, and had travelled independently and not with Thomson, who organise it, but the wine we won was lovely!!!

I think I may have posted about this product last year. Its called Incognito and we first saw it at Gardeners World Live. We used the soap, the after sun and the repellent and had no bites.

More information here ...... http://www.lessmosquito.com/ - you can read on here how it works

It also doesn't have the horrible smell of deet.

We have tried everything from Avon Soft, marmite, cintronella, Jungle formula etc, but the Incognito has been the best.

I think it all depends on where you are, at what time of day it is, weather conditions, sitting near vegetation and many more things at to whether you will be bitten. The best thing for a room is air conditioning as the blighters  hate cold air.

when i went to Cuba i made up a formula that i found on the internet, it was good but i have lost the recipe, i remember it had lemon juice and eucalyptus, maybe i will drink plenty of mythos and get them drunk.

try x-pel. you can buy it in B&M's for 99p or x-pel wipes in Lidl for 99p.
It's the only stuff that stops me being bitten, and I live here!

newbies, we can swear that doesn't work.... If like me the little s*ds never come near you it is fine. But believe the reputation - if alcohol worked, Jen wouldn't need to spray deet halfway up her legs and wear cover-ups in the evenings - we would have cracked it!

The worst risk is early evening as the sun goes down and you are savouring another lovely Arillas meal, and they are savouring your ankles. Jen gets very few bites now, but is Jungle Strength DEET that does it for her. Oh yes Terry it smells awful, but compared to the 17 3cm blisters she had lanced here in 2003, who cares?

I have never been bitten in all the months I've been there. Famous last words.....

i never used to get bitten until one fateful day in Acharavi taking pics whilst stood amongst a lot of greenery, a friend of mine needed hospital treatment after her leg swelled up. the alcohol may not stop them but it doesn't matter so much when they do, and at least they might get a hang over and fly into a wall.

love your philosophy newbies. The picture in my mind of mozzies crashing into walls drunk has a certain charm....

Take care, just look after yous, and have a typically great time in Arillas. Thats WOTITSALLABOUT. Plagiarising Eggy comes second nature to me.....

All the best

I agree - we use one in each room ( - but don't forget to leave a window open so that the mozzies can escape) . We plug them in before we go out on a night and leave them plugged in during the night. Then Jungle Formula plastered on every inch of exposed skin before you go out in the evening, and we have very few problems.

I find the Avon is very good and you can order online for quick delivery straight to your door and plug ins do work.

Spray under the bed before going out for the evening and catch the little blighters that hide waiting for you to turn in!!!

Another tip is to put the toilet brush holder over the shower drain in the bathroom to stop them coming in via the drain. Also a little drop of dettol or mouthwash down the sink and shower has been recommended at nightime. They do find a way of getting in don't they?

I always take Vit B complex now and in May had one bite which wasn't infected at all. You need to take them for a good spell before your holiday so that it builds up in your skin.

I know it's hot but wear long trousers at night and sleeves if you can bear it. I hate being bitten and I choose to be sexy and alluring and free of mossie bites so keep covered up!!!

Have a wonderful time inspite of the mossies

Cheers Nan x

Hi
Thanks to everyone for their advice.

Now have Incognito spray and incense sticks, avon spray and
have started on the vitamin b tabs. Will try the tip re spraying under bed and covering drain holes.

The guys have checked out the tennis at Hotel Marvel and the court looks good - let's hope they can use it in exchange for buying drinks/snacks at the bar.

Just over 2 weeks to go and counting.

Will be glad to get away from the rainy Glasgow and work/chores 'tho I will miss my dog.

Have a great time. Sort of know you will.

Whatever the strategy, if the mozzies bother you, find lotions with 50% DEET. And cover feet and ankles in it.

There is no Tennis Court in Arillas -deep blush- but there is a Villa called Helios Court. You see the tennis court wasn't popular in 30 degree heat and it was flat and well located and well....we killed the court.

Thirsty Pete thinks that eating Marmite in the last couple of weeks actually works too.

Jungle formula for us and watch out for hotel loo's during the day! They lurk awaiting exposed flesh.

There is quite a large plot, erm tennis court, in St Steph but I have never seen it in use. Eggy how would you access it?

There is a volley court net being erected on the beach by the jetty, as I type. Akis looks like he could be a good player. Hopefully some photos and a video will be published soon.

Very hot today

Well Frank , I would have 6 or 7 ouzos and drive straight at it, close eyes and hope for the best.
(Some one would probably then shout "NET" and I would have to do it again!)
