Title: Bardis Sun Hotel....Gone Independant!
Post by: martin-w on January 05, 2008, 06:16:03 PM
Hi all!
Just to let you know that I have spoken to Dorita today to book my holiday at The Bardis Sun Hotel after confirming my flight details. She confirms that they now have no dealings with Thomson and are taking bookings direct by telephone. A taxi can be arranged by Dorita by ringing her two weeks prior to arrival to meet you at the airport at the rate of 45eur. I will be arriving on 2nd. May for two weeks. Her rates are very good, I have been given the rate of £50.00 a week! The hotel is very comfortable, quiet and has a very good pool and garden yet is only a short distance from the beach and all the rest of Arillas.
To contact the hotel there are two 'phone numbers. I usually find Dorita on the second one.
0030-26630-52050
0030-26630-51039
If you dial 0844-972-9700 first, pause and wait for instructions, calls cost 2 pence a minute at any time, on a service called 'First Number'.
Now I have 'taken the plunge' and booked it, I am really looking forward to my return to Arillas after my break away! I think it was the thought of traveling alone that put me off a bit.
Yammas!
Martin.

Well done for both you and Bardis.

You'll be fine in Arillas and well looked after.  Many years ago I used to come to Arillas on my own for an "unwind week in Sept"  - Never any regrets - Enjoyed 'em.

Cheers

Corfu Escape it seems from their website have taken over the Horizon and another (name escapes me - scuse the pun)..

£50 a week seems very good... do you know what a double would be?  I might give her a ring myself.

We are looking for September... I have tried Annas and Dimitri Studios.

Hi Rugbymad

Bardis Hotel does cater for families they have limited rooms (4 i think) that have a "side room" which is open with no door off the main bedroom.
I have stayed at the hotel many times so can highly recommend it, the rooms are all large with a fridge and kettle the pool and area around are good and Doritta cooks lovely snacks  the families restaurant the Gratziella is a busy restaurant in the evening.

The garlic prawns in Graziella are to die for. Sent a complete stranger there for them when they aksed where can we get really good food (conversation happened after a few in the Coconut bar last October, we'd had them the night before.)

We saw them the next day and they were over the moon about them. Not just us then! Try!!!!

H i All!
Eggy.. thanks for your words of encouragement! Hope to meet you in May and buy you a large one!
Blondegirl... I presume rates for a double room would be £100 in May and October, the rest of the year is on a sliding scale, best contact Dorrita on the numbers I have provided for more exact details.
Rugbymad....As Yvonne stated there are four family suites, the hotel is well suited to youngsters as there is good garden space round the pool and a pool room/bar for shade if the weather gets really hot.
Philandjen...One of the reasons for staying at The Bardis is its close proximity to The Graziella or 'food heaven'. For a party, you can always pop into 'Poppy's' The Bardis Sun Studios next door where there is action until early hours most nights!
Hope this is the beginning of the return to many trips to Arillas, going to book for September/October possibly for three weeks next time. Can't get enough of a good thing!
Yammas,
Martin.

Hi Gaye!
Dorrita is brilliant on the 'phone, she always makes me feel at ease and manages a joke. She has a very good memory and remembers my past visits.
Don't worry, just get dialing!

That is great news for Dorita - hopefully she will be full to the rim this year!!

Spoke to Dorita this morning to say I wanted to book with her. ....booked a flight now and have got to phone her when she gets back at 6.00 tonight... I suppose thats Corfu time.!

I assumed this was B & B... she doesnt do self catering... but then I dont cook anyway, just snacks so it wont matter.  Its a good price though and want to stay with her for September....

Thanks Martin for the tip and the cheap phone number, it was a great help... what about Transfers... as she doesnt have a website there isnt much to look up.  I have booked a taxi before with San Stef. Travel. so might incorporate that into the holiday.. so what we save we spend on taxi transfer.. oh well.. c'est la vie!  As we arrive about 22.30 and leave about 20.00 it might be worth it..  unless we cadge a lift with Poppy and Spiros guests and pay them.

We stayed at the Bardis Sun Studios last year and had a lovely time... but they are so expensive now compared to what we can pay this year.

So cant wait now... got 7 months to look forward to it.

What date do you fly blondegirl??

Let us know the price and details etc when you find out.
Title: Re: Bardis Sun Hotel....Gone Independant!
Post by: blondegirl on January 08, 2008, 06:09:47 PM
Just phoned Dorita again.... easy booking... seems too simple! Think I will write to confirm it myself to remind her who I was.

Just told her my name was Sue (whether she wrote that down or not I dont know).. Anyway told her my dates and she asked if we needed a taxi... 50 euros ok..  its b & b which is fine.. and its booked.. you pay when you get there..

So all in all with the flights of £172 and £297 (400 euros) for the room for two weeks its about  £470.... so I think thats a bargain even with the extra taxi..  Mind you our passports run out in March so thats an extra £140!!!!

I didnt think we would be going there this year but I thought oh stop dithering get on with it.

Oh and I had a choice of floor... I thought about the top but I dont like the look of the metal windy stairs they have there, dragging your bags up and the bottom might have not much privacy, so have opted for the middle.. hope that was the right choice!

Post by: Smiffypink on January 08, 2008, 06:15:26 PM
Thats brilliant Sue!!

Yep you picked the right floor in my opinion, when i stayed there we were on the bottom, i wouldve preferred to be the middle floor.

If i remember rightly its only the metal staircase at one end, the other end is normal stairs.

Will email you in a min!

Well done Sue, I think that's a bargain too. £235 each for 2 weeks bed and breakfast including your flights.  Crikey you would be toiling to find 2 weeks B&B in the U.K for that...and that's without the flights!

Let the countdown begin! :-)

Glad you're sorted Blondegirl. I've sometimes booked the Arillas Inn Apartrments through Leo and always slightly panic because if he even does write anything down, it's always on a scrap of paper and I'm always left wondering if it will happen. But I have to say, he's never let us down  - the room is always there for us and the taxis have always arrived. It's just the Greek way of doing things.

Hi Sue. The view from the top floor is great but a long way up. we like the ground floor but middle is good too. Sure you will have a fantastic time. We are next door in Aug so wont see you this year but should see John and Brenda in June briefly.
Title: Re: Bardis Sun Hotel....Gone Independant!
Post by: blondegirl on January 08, 2008, 08:38:36 PM
What a shame we shall miss you... and John and Brenda... I didnt think they were going back this year...

Do you think we should have booked a ground floor room instead now?  I thought it might be a bit noisy and no privacy being on ground level near the pool, I know we could change it with no problems.

Hi Sue I think you will be fine on the second floor, we've  had room 22 on the second floor and its as you say just a bit more private than poolside. We have been going to the Bardis family at the Gratziela for many years and have never had anything confirmed in writing, always paid when we arrive, and never failed to have a taxi sign waiting for us at arrivals. Have a wonderful holiday

Hi thanks for that.  Do you know if they at least have a fridge in the room so I can put cold drinks in it. Or a kettle to make tea and coffee.
Title: Re: Bardis Sun Hotel....Gone Independant!
Post by: Shuey on January 09, 2008, 01:37:20 PM
Hi Sue

We stayed with Dorita twice in 2005. There is a fridge, kettle and two cups for making tea.

We stayed on the top floor both times.  There is a spiral stair case at each end and the steps are marble.  Dorita cleans them everyday!

Ive heard from the Greeks that they class their best rooms on the top floor - not sure why.

I am sure you will have a lovely time and you will be fine on the middle floor.

Enjoy

Sarah

I expect its because of the views... but I have a "thing" about metal staircases and bridges and piers... never ever liked them.. so the thought of going up and down them with suitcases too I wouldnt be happy with it.

Glad about the kettle though, thanks!

I am a bit like that with escalators, i hesitate every time before i get on one!!  Fell backwards on one when i was a toddler and have been wary ever since!

The stairs were a bit of a nightmare late at night when we were a bit tipsy!! ;)

Hi,

I was thinking of going in July or August - any idea how much it would be then, per week?  Am looking at that double room with separate child room off it!
Title: Re: Bardis Sun Hotel....Gone Independant!
Post by: blondegirl on January 09, 2008, 06:43:37 PM
When I asked Dorita she said it was 50 euros like Martin said for 1 person, double for a couple obviously - anytime.. arriving anytime in the week as well, so you can get a flight any day.  So I thought that was very good.  She will arrange a taxi too if you call her 2 weeks before for 50 euros one way.
Title: Re: Bardis Sun Hotel....Gone Independant!
Post by: martin-w on January 09, 2008, 07:11:47 PM
Hi Blondegirl,
Glad you managed to book O.K. with Dorrita. She told me the room price was £50/week not 50 euros! As I understand, you pay in B.O.E. notes on arrival, then she 'cashes' the notes into euros when the exchange rate is best. I will be arriving on a friday afternoon as the flight from CWL Cardiff is at 0715 hrs. I have asked for the ground floor as in the past I have found the hotel to be mostly quiet and there isn't much disturbance generally and you can go straight from your patio to the pool!
The Bardis family are hardworking and make you feel very welcome, and breakfast time in the poolside bar is a very social event. I hope they do well this year as they deserve it!
From what I have been told, the taxi driver waits for the flight arrival at the airport and holds up a card with 'Bardis Hotel Arillas' on it!
Take care,
Martin.

I like to confirm things about the time of our flight (that could even change though) so I have sent a letter confirming it with what I thought was the cost she she will know doubt put me right if I am wrong.  Oh Well... £50 each is still cheap isnt it but I was sure she said 50 Euros.  I will give her a ring I think to double check.

Its very confusing as everyone else I have emailed have quoted me for euros.

Dorrita didn't mention air con when I spoke to her. Next time I speak to her I will ask.
All the best,
Martin.

Just to reiterate.. I phoned Dorrita and she said for us it will be 100 euros pp pw which is very good and b & b..

A lot of other places quoted me 35 euros per night per room x 14 = 490 euros by my reckoning, but we do have taxi on top but most places DIY dont do transfers either.

Dorita does a really lovely breakfast.Steve usually eats most of mine though as not up for eating much too early. I am pretty sure they also now have air con in all rooms which is a god send. Do hope everyone who has been in the past will continue to support Dorita and family.

Will be probably travelling on my own this year, usually stay around the rainbow complex,(previously with family) but thought might try this year further afield in the attempt to be Shirley Valentine. Is the Bardis ok for the individual traveller and has anyone found cheap flights from Manchester? They all seem to be from down south.

Hi Ruthie!
I am traveling alone to Arillas this year since I lost my wife. I am staying at the Bardis Sun Hotel with Dorrita because I have always felt 'at home' there. It was the last place we stayed at together. Dorrita is a great host and she and her family are always there to help if you need it. The hotel is near to all the rest of the resort, Poppy's place The Bardis Sun Studios is next door with something going on most evenings, but the Hotel is quieter if you need it. Dorrita's prices for the single traveler are very reasonable too. When are you traveling?
I have found a flight from Cardiff CWL return with meals for £248.00 in May. That was the best I could find without the trek and trauma of Gatwick.
You are never really alone in Arillas once you get there as everyone is so friendly.
All the best,
Martin.

We have never stayed at the hotel but stayed at the studios last year and we had a great time there.  The hotel looks really nice so on everyone else recommendations (especially Martins) we decided to book there this year.  Everyone is so friendly in Arillas I dont think you would feel lonely or uncomfortable, there will always be someone to talk to, have a drink or a meal with.  Have a look at the blurb I found and put in another thread from Lozicle...title "the freak is back".... something about the single female traveller, might give you some confidence.  :-)

That is really good news for Dorita - it looks like she will be very busy this season.

thanks for that, have been coming to Arillas since 1997 but always with family so know many, I know I won't be on my own. It's just the cost of flights that put me off. I will be going at the end  of July, for 2 weeks as always.

Hi Ruthie, if you are looking at prices of flights from Manchester we used charterflights.co.uk.  They are very slightly (couple of pounds) dearer than cheapestflights.co.uk but you only have to pay a deposit and the balance 8 weeks before you go.  Also the initial price they quote is incl of taxes, etc.  We paid £245 each to fly from Manchester over the school half-term break in May (always more expensive) and we paid £220 each to fly in September.  Both flights are day time flights, Air Malta chartered by XL.  Don't know what you think of those prices but worth a look.  Good luck.  W & S. x

hi all,

Does anyone know if the Bardis sun has fridges in the rooms?  I don't cook on holiday, but do like to be able to make a cup of tea in the morning, or have some juice in the fridge!  I am looking at going to Arillas in August with my 2 daughters, travelling from Manchester and usually book through the xl website - I notice their flights seem to be Air Malta now.

Hi Chorttonfiona!,
Yes the Bardis Sun Hotel has a fridge, a kettle and from what I can remember a toaster in each room.Last time I stayed there our room had a very large fridge, ice making trays and enough room to store milk, cans, water, butter, bread and snacks. We used it to keep our supplies cold to make mid day rolls to take on our walks.
The rooms are large, well equipped and a 'home from home'.
All the best,
Martin.
