Title: pop-ups.
Post by: Maggie on January 13, 2008, 10:17:15 PM
Does anyone else have a problem with pop-ups? I never used to experience this trouble, but now, whenever I login here, I have them appear. It's very annoying, and I don't know how to stop them! Can anyone out there help me please?

Hi Maggie, hows Edinburgh? Jen and me just love the Festival - for our silver wedding we spent three weeks there. Three barrels (yes!) of Guiness and so many fringe shows. Oh yes.

But serioulsly - Internet Explorer has its own popup blocker and I copied this from the help file:

How do I turn Pop-up Blocker on or off?

Pop-up Blocker is turned on in Internet Explorer by default. To turn it off or to turn it on again if you've already turned it off, follow these steps:

To turn Pop-up Blocker on or off

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Pop-up Blocker.
Do one of the following:
To turn off Pop-up Blocker, click Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.
To turn on Pop-up Blocker, click Turn On Pop-up Blocker.

If that doesn't help go to Tools/Internet Options and delete all the browsing history  and cookies. If you need help with that, send us a PM and we'll lead you through it.

Hope this helps. All of us get some bother with popups. Wouldn't mind if they were all about Arillas....

Is there anyone else having that too?

Dimitris, the popups I get are stuff like gambling and mobile phone adverts. I delete them as soon as they come in, and don't really read them. Thanks Phil and Jen, I've got firefox, and I can't find a way to stop them.

hmm they are definately not from our website.
Except if anyone else is having the same ones by the time he gets on arillas.com.  which means a lot of wiping brushing and cleaning  for me on the website
You have to check your system for programs that are called adware.

Dimitris, we never get popups from arillas.com.

Many computer users have all sorts of adware/spyware present without even knowing it. The internet is wonderful (makes Arillas a daily fix for us!) but also has dangers and troubles. Like kids on facebook or bebo etc.

Some sites set tracking cookies, others make changes to your system without consent and it is like being violated.

Jen and I are both very computer literate - I even teach it at College, so we can deal with it all. All I can say is that your site (may it last forever) is NOT the source of adware or spyware.

Guess people will end up paying for software to protect themselves. Is it the producers of that software who produce the viruses and malware???

I'm not blaming this website for my problem Dimitri. It does happen when I'm on here, but thats probably cos I'm always on here. I spend a lot of my computer time here, but I get popups on any site I visit. Phil, I have done a check on my security, and cleaned it up, but the popups haven't gone. It may be from something my daughter has been doing, but I asked here cos i wondered if it may be something others experience too. And because I thought some of the forum members who are cleverer than me would know how to stop it!

Hi All!
About a year ago my son, who is a musician with his own studio bought an Apple Mac G5 quad processor computer to 'run' his studio. I used to have a P.C. built by my other son who is a computer engineer. I bought my younger son's old Apple Mac G4 from him, and although it's OSX operating system is a bit different to use than my old P.C. I have no problems on any site with popups, cookies or any junk. It would seem that the Apple Mac system is 'immune' to all these intrusions without the need to buy 'protection' as its all built into the operating system. It's totally stable, never 'crashes' and is the best investment I have made in a long time. The Apple system is brilliant for music, Photos and all the normal computer things you do with none of the hassle!
I'll consult my 'computer buff' engineer son to see if he has any ideas.
All the best,
Martin.

Maggie,

I use Firefox and you can go into Tools, Options and click on Content and just tick Block Pop Up Windows.

Dimitri,

I have never had any pop ups from this site, so I don't think it is a problem for you.

Like EEG, I always use Firefox, and I never have any popup problems. I think that Firefox is much better than Internet Explorer, and you also get less problems with spyware and malware.

Some of the popups can occur when viewing photographs on the forum because these are are stored on hosting web sites.

Along with the software that Kes has suggested run the following on a regular basis ...

Spybot - Search and Destroy from .... http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html

Ccleaner from ..... http://www.ccleaner.com/ this will clean out any "debris" from the Computer registry (some of which can be hiding spyware, trojans etc.)

Whatsrunning from ......  http://www.whatsrunning.net/whatsrunning/download.aspx - this will show all programs and processes that are running on your PC. It also shows all of the programs that load when you switch the PC on and some of these are unnecessary and can be disabled.

If your PC is slow to startup or to shutdown it is almost certain that you have spyware or unwanted programs loading when you switch on

Use F-Secure as your anti-virus software as it also blocks spyware, malware and spam. You have to pay for this, but is much better than Norton or Mcafee and uses far less of your computers resources.

Run at least three anti-spyware programs each week because you will find that some will find spyware that the others can miss.

Backup the data on your PC on a regular basis. You can get a 250 Gb external hard drives for about £50, these days.

Wow what a mind of information you clever members are! Pop ups now gone - So how about a winter master class for us computer challenged members? Learning how to post pictures, web links and much more onto this site would be great, pass away a few hours as well during these cold wet nights. Love reading all the post but would also like to take a more active part. Anyone out there to take up the challenge?

I have Firefox and AVG... not that I know anything about it... my son and Mike are the ones who sort out the gremlins for me.

Hi Kes!
I am very pleased with my Apple Mac being a 'purpose built' unit rather than an assembly of sub units like most P.C's. I have bought a large lcd monitor(not Apple) and an Acoustic Lab sound system. All my photo scanners and peripherals from my P.C. work as 'plug and play' as does my Brother 'all in one' fax, printer copier and my cameras. There seems to be a driver built into the OSX software which simply and magically 'deals with it'.
Over the years of having a P.C. run by Windows it would appear to me that most faults originate in the operating system and I have never found a version of Microsoft's best that doesn't have some unresolved problem. The Apple software is much easier to use for all the 'normal' uses even for someone like me, as its so logical!
I would disagree with the cost aspect, when you consider what you are getting included in the OSX 'package'. I use Google and Firefox the same as I always have but the 'firewall' is built in and is almost 100% virus and hacker proof with nothing else needed! This means that the computer is very fast and extremely easy to use and maintain. You don't have to buy new either, the second hand prices are very good.
I am a convert now I have used it for a while, my son also gets off lightly too as I'm not bothering him with my computer problems any more!
Yammas,
Martin.

Kes,
I think the list you have supplied of all the 'fixes' says it all. I must admit it's been quite an 'eye opener' for me as I am by no means a computer expert. I arrived at Apple more by luck than judgment, certainly wouldn't go back now!
All the best,
Martin.

The problem with Apple Mac computers is their incompatibility with "business" and "school applications. You can get the best of best worlds with a new Mac (cost about £1000) and then use VM ( Virtual Machine) software to run XP or Vista. There is also the lack of "Free" software for the Mac.

Most people need office type programs ie Excel, Word, Powerpoint etc to exchange information and you require a Windows PC to do this cheaply.

I will help anyone with PC problems, if I can, just PM me.

Maybe we can extend the "Website technical problems & questions" section to include a general "PC help" area.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice. I've cleaned my pc, but time will tell!!!!!
Once again, I'm not blaming this site for the problem, but I knew if I asked here, I would get help. Thank you all.(The blocker is on, and as I eventually discovered, always has been).
