Title: Eating out in Arillas
Post by: Holly on September 05, 2007, 12:54:46 PM
Hi
I am new here. We have booked a holiday in Arillas starting 21st September. We booked it on the basis that Arillas has not been spoilt by too much tourism. We love trying out all cuisines and wondered which tavernas/restaurants serve the best Greek food.

Hi Holly and welcome to the forum!

Well firstly congratulations on booking what will be a fantastic holiday!

All the restaurants serve Greek food, you wont get a bad meal in Arillas in my opinion, part of the fun of going somewhere new is to sample all or nearly all of the restaurants, they have boards outside with their specials on, see what takes your fancy and whichever one you choose im sure you'll love.

The next night try a different one, then you can find out regarding your own tastes and views, which is your favourite restaurant/s, then post all about it on your return!

My personal favourites are Thalassa, The Captains, Brouklis and Costas on the Beach.

Have a great holiday :-) !

Welcome to the Forum Holly.

Have you been to any other Greek Islands?

Hi terryw
Yes I have been to Crete, but it was 24 years ago, before it got too spoilt by mass tourism. I loved it.
I would never have thought of going to Corfu because of the negative publicity it had had from places like Benitses and Kavos, but watching Rick Stein changed my mind about the island.

Are the mossies really bad right now?

I've used my credit card at Portofino to pay for a meal when the cash was running a bit low.  Funny thing was the phone lines were down so machine wasn't working, got told to call in and pay the next day and this was before we became great friends with Spiro.  As said there is also the ATM machine on the main road

Brouklis serve authentic Corfiot food, absolutely perfect. Grazella do garilc prawns to die for. Kostas on the Beach serve a fish stew that will keep you talking for days. Vavilas (Tomas) do the best fresh fish in Arillas. Portofino do stamna which you can't describe. Thalassa do fried perch that jumps off the plate. They are just some of the lovely food I have eaten in Arillas. The list could go on and on.

All in walking distance, wherever you are. And a bit further out there is Mon Amour, Night Owl, Three Brothers....

No wonder half the forum members are always on a diet. The men just get fat....

is it cod chips and mushy peas?

Doubt the mushy peas but the fish will be served with very edible potatoes. You won't eat them before you are full up with gorgeous fish though. Most places do a full blown English fry-up if you want it. Jen has done it a few times. Me - I just loooove the Corfiot food. It is worth trying...

Hi, eastie.  For us part of the fun is trying the local cuisine. It`s a case of `try anything once....`.    If you don`t like it after sampling it, then so be it. You won`t be dissappointed with what`s on offer.

Eastie
Only English Food?  You will be surprised how good Greek food is most of it resembles English food Just ask what the dish contains you will be surprised

We have just had Stamna for dinner and we are back home now
Greek, English,  its just the way it is put together

Give it a go then post your reply when you return,
I bet it starts something like this.
Whilst in Arillas I tried the Greek food    Mmmmmmmmmmmm

im quite the opposite i come to greece to get away from boring tasteless english food.roll out the stifado, which is rather like a beef casserole but tastier.give it a try.

Me too Wino, i love trying all the different cuisines.  Italian and greek being my favourites.  I really look forward to all the mouth watering traditional greek dishes and stay right away from English food while on holiday.

We have a new greek restaruant opened up in Norwich, £15.95 for Stifado on the menu.  A pity they are not the same prices as Greece. ;)

If you like beef Eastie give them a go they are so tasty and the beef melts in your mouth.

Enjoy!!

saw peops eating them last month and like the film, all the ladies were saying "I'll have what she's having....." I never had room for sweet puddings etc - always so full of gorgeous traditional Greek dishes like bourdetto, bianco, stifado, sofrito, stamna, seafood, taramasalata........ need I go on? 12 pounds added to my waist. It all went there!

Hello all, lets face it you never get a bad meal in Arillas wherever u choose to eat..I am a girl who loves to get her nosebag on! We patricularly love Vavillas, fish superb but also the meatballs are like manna from heaven like no meatballs u have ever tasted before. When we ate there a few weeks back had the best giggle as the German chap on table next to us was sporting a miners light on his head so he could see his plate better..will post a picture when I work out how!! Does anybody else buy the Greek cookbooks and herbs and spices from Alex and do Arillas meals at home..or am I the lone ranger here?! We had the most sublime grilled calves liver at Armourada and when I asked my village butcher who fatrms his own meat for calves liver last week the look on his face was a picture. ''I would not dare try to sell it darling, would get a brick through my window''. How crazy is that?!! Sorry to any veggie forum members, do not mean to offend. Had agood old Norfolk dinner of pheasant, braised red cabbage bread sauce mash and sprouts tonight..nice but may be a Stifado day tomorrow!

many of us "cook Greek" here in blighty, georgia. Jen and me had stamna on Saturday (and Sunday - I awlays make too much.) The boys bought me another Greek cook-book for Christmas. I expect I'll get volume 2 this year! Apart from loving the food, it brings a bit of Arillas into our lives eating Greek. Surrounded by Marikas posters, the Arillas wallpaper on both computers, Kourtaki bottles stood in the hearth, KoumQuat in the cupboard.... sad aren't we!!

I was going to order the liver at Amourada Georgia but bottled out... I should have had it I think now.

As Phil said we all seem to mess about in the kitchen with Greek food... even some recipes on here somewhere.

Hi All,
Back in May I picked up an interesting book in the shop next to Olga's travel. Its called 'Corfiot Cusine' and contains recipies for almost any occasion covering a large selection of dishes. There are hints and 'substitute' suggestions and its been great to use since I have been back in the U.K. for those 'Corfu' evenings with family and friends. I also have two C.D's 'Anthology of Greek Music' and 'Corfu, 18 instrumental and songs' to accompany the delicious food and to set the atmosphere on the patio!
I must aggree that the food in Arillas is great no mater where you eat. I always stick to the traditional Greek menus. From Brouklis via the 'front' Graziella through to Thomas' Vavilas fish taverna where as you rightly said the seafood 'special' is a wonderful delicious experiance! They all have their own unique and different menus and its difficult to have a 'favorite'. I hope the 'Sidari' effect never latches on in Arillas, English food is available in England everywhere, we don't go to Corfu for that!!
Yammas,
Martin.

Hi all, glad I am not the only one who attempts a bit of Greek fare at home.
Blonde girl, do try the grilled calves liver on your next visit, must be one of the nicest meals I have ever had and lord knows I have had a few!
Sharon, so glad somebody else witnessed the German guy with miners light, we left the day before you arrived, so his light must have been well used..trust he had plenty of batteries?!! Just viewed Eggys beach picture, wow how does 25degrees sound to everyone? No brainer that one eh? x

Ah well Eileen, this is a word I got from young George Bardis.  Nostimo is delicious and pendenostimo is very delicious.  I said doesn't pende mean five, and he said yes, it's five times delicious!
I tried it on Thomas at Vavillas and he said "Ah, do you speak Greek?" so it doesn't seem as though George was pulling my leg then!!

No-one should take any offence Mary - the whole point of Arillas is that there are so many and everyone has their favourite(s)

Portofino is just great. But so many others to fit in, you run out of evenings... I think we ate just about everywhere last September but will struggle for just 2 weeks in July.

Take care

That's so true Phil - but I agree there are so many good places to eat. Brouklis for one I'm so glad I went there this time. One evening I had  my evening meal at the Creperie which was just as good quality as any of the resteraunts - all good . I too have tried Greek Cookery at home, sometimes not always successfull like my Mousaka I had done enough to feed a small country and my Bechemel sauce was like mush, but the best one I tried was Pastichio ( sorry for the spelliing )  that takes a lot of doing, but I was very pleased with the results. Greek Cookery seems it can be so simple sometimes yet such fantastic results.

Ah Mary, I know. I often cook Greek, and do a fair take on stamna and stifado, and now feta stuffed chicken breast (inspired by gaygo) but if I had Roula's skill with flavours I would weigh as much as an elephant! I probably will in July after 2 weeks at Brouklis...

Take care luvver

Ooh Phil Feta stuffed chicken breast sounds lovely - think I'll try and make it - Yes Roula is an excellant cook and yes I could easily become bigger than I already am if I lived in Arillas!  Tommorrow my brother Stephen is coming to stay and weather permitting ,well I can bbq under an umbrella , I'm going to do a Greek style bbq.  On  the last thursday of my hols I went to a bbq at Kaloudis with Ken and  his daughter and I loved the way they did it , buffet syle as much greek salad you could eat, and I love stuffed vine leaves, ant Tzatsiki ( sorry for the spelling, ) then the meat was served separately all marinaded in lovely Greek herbs. So I've got all the indrediants for my salad and I'm going to  make a marinade from the herbs from my garden.
Take care

For 8 years we ate no where else other than Portofino, we didn't stay any where else either thats how we became so close to the whole family.  Over the last couple of years we have started to stayed at other apartments and have sampled the food in the other establishments, can honestly say I have only ever had 1 bad meal in all the time.  Got to admit Dimitris spit roast lamb is my favourite all time meal.

Hi everyone, I'm off to Arillas on Friday for my 5th trip and while I enjoy all the meals in the various tavernas one of our favourites is Eftihia's at the Kaloudis end of the road. The food is great and the service / welcome is as good as any where in Arillas snd there's a real traditonal feel to the place. However the place never seems to be mentioned on these threads and I just wondered why. Anyone know why? Thanks.

Hi Dai,

Yes Eftihia has been mentioned previously, but it's good to see you bringing it to everyone's attention again. I agree with your opinion on the food, family and the traditional feel. It's a favourite place for me to chill out with a book after a morning on the beach.

Just to remind everyone...

Its our favourite too... We ate there most of the time last year, lunch or dinner... nothing is too much trouble for Efi, she is such a lovely girl... its a lovely quiet part of the sea front too with lovely views of the beach.  The Sea Bream was the best I have had in Arillas with wonderful herby butter.  Will never forget last September when it poured with rain, lightening etc.  we just moved everything inside and carried on eating... Efi even got her mum to take us home even though we were prepared to walk if they gave me a black bin liner!!  Shame we shall miss it all this year!

Thanks for the replies. Like Eileen we tend to go there there after a morning on the beach. Although we usually have books with us I can't read there as I get mesmorised by the views. Sometimes I can spend hours looking at the view, not looking at anything in particular, just feeling completely relaxed. Of course the odd beer, retsina or karafaki of ouzo helps. Roll on Friday. And you are so right, like everyone else in Arillas Efi and Katerina are lovely people.

We have a plan for our two weeks in July. Slap up meal with John and Dot at Brouklis (Roula, get the galactoboureko in the oven luvver...) then a starvation diet till we leave. Believe that and you'll believe anything!

There are so many choices. Last September we were there all month, and ate nearly everywhere but still missed some. It takes more than a week to eat in all the different places along the sea front alone, let alone all the rest.

This is an apology to any we miss out in July - two weeks isn't long enough! And then there are some you just have to go back to... oh decisions decisions!

No wonder I always put on a stone when I'm there...

Eating out in Arillas is such a big part of it all.

Phil

Have you lost all that you put on last year Phil, ready for this year?  I remember meeting you last year and you were rubbing your tummy saying you had put weight on... we all do dont we... we have to make up for missing out the rest of the year.  The clothes I take never seem to fit at the end of a fortnight!  I blame it on the heat! ;-)

I know you will have a brilliant time when you go "home" in two weeks.. and staying "on site" too at the Brouklis I see.

Hi BG. Sad to say not lost a single pound. My overstressed job ended last year, and although I am working now, nothing like the pressures. Now I will be spending two weeks staying at Brouklis (we all know that means wonderful food) and will be obliged to visit many others, all of which provide something I just can't resist. I may be on my first ever diet when I get back....

But do I care?? No-brainer. Bring it on!
