Title: Hello everyone...can I ask you
Post by: nickb on May 24, 2007, 05:15:44 PM
Hi there, my other half and I are going to Arillas early July with our little boy.

Can you recommend some traditional tavernas/restaurants and average cost of a meal (with wine of course).

We would also like to know if there are operators offering excursions, we would like to explore further afield as we are both interested in the history and culture.

Thanks for reading this

All the best

Nick, Marie and baby Alex

All the taverna's are great.  You won't get a bad meal in Arillas.  This will be our 6th visit and our kids love the local food.  We are going end of July for 4 weeks.  Great ah!!!

If you can check out Arillas travel, which is opposite the Cocnut bar, I'm sure you could find some excursions from there. I'm not sure about costs etc. but they will be cheaper than your rep can sell. I won't be able to report back to you cos I'll still be there when you go. Have fun!

We used the tour operators when we first started going to Arillas.  Now we always use Arillas Travel, they are so much cheaper and you get just the same for your money.  They do lots of excursions.  Check it out.

Hello Nickb,

Like someone else said, all the tavernas are lovely and very family friendly.  Last year when I was there with my two teenage children and my daughter's friend, the most we paid for an evening meal was 55 euros including a couple of drinks each.  The portions are huge so you really struggle to eat more than two courses.  On average we paid roughly 40-45 euros each night including the tip and always had lovely food.  Hope this helps.

We went on one of the boat trips which was a bit rough with choppy seas, my daughter was really ill so that put us off going on any more boat trips but there are plenty of trips you can go on.  We never made it to Corfu town last year so we will be going there this year.

You will have a fantastic time!

Hi nickb - said I'd let you know on our return from Arillas - it would appear almost every restaurant/taverna welcomes children and has a special menu if required. The kiddies menus looked particularly cheap.  All the food we tried was very good - Brouklis, Thalassa, Kostas on the Beach, Horizon and Mirage at lunchtime; also Captains. We ate out every night, usually having a starter each, main course each and loads of wine. We didn't particularly check the costs either and our food averaged 28 - 42 euros per night. Fantastic value!

Have a super time

Hello,
Just to add that we agree with all that has been said about the Tavernas, but would add Mon Amour also known as Kokinoss up in Kavadades.  This village is some 3 KMs away but they will send a car to pick you all up and take you back home free of charge and it really is a traditional taverna which is open all year round and used exstensively by the locals.  Prices are also extremely reassonable.   As for excursions, if you drive and are not phased by driving on the other side of the road I would suggest that you hire a car for say three days.  For about £70 hire cost you can do all the excursions available and spend as much or little time as you want rather than having to stick to the excursion itinery.  If you do hire a car try and do Agios Georgis to Pagi and then on to Angelo kastro and then on to Paleokastritsas for a truly remakable experience and scenery.   You will also be able to do Corfu town of course.  Good luck and enjoy Arillas.

Aqua Park - Soo Much Fun Deffo Must Doo.
Theo's Boat - Everyone will love it.
Corfu Town- Really Good but not if you hate long journeys.

And also another thing that me and my dad do is hire out quad bikes and go exploring corfu we found some really nice places and we stopp off for drinks at little cafe's last time we ended up by little resturants and cafes surrounded by german tourists

Sidari is good for the evening but not really for a family with young children it gets a bit roudy and busy down there.

And thats coming from mee and kid hehe

Have just returned from another wonderful 10 days in Arillas - all the tavernas are good -  but can really recommend The Captains Table, Angela and the staff there are so helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Will be returning in September!!!!

Hi Marion,

The Captains Table has gathered itself quite a following...quite rightly too, good food and a lovely family.
It's seems that there are quite a lot of us going over in September!

We love the Captains...  very friendly and relaxed.  Sometimes we would see Angela and her girls on the beach during the day and then see her in the evening working.  They have very long work days but are so welcoming despite what time we get there to eat.

I know just what you mean Gemmalou. I always stay at the Rainbow and have never been to the Captain's for the same reason - silly really. I always feel disloyal somehow when I go elsewhere, although they never seem to get upset when we go to Brouklis. There are so many lovely places to try and we always end up back at the Rainbow for a nightcap (or two!).  At the end of the day, they are all trying to make a living and maybe I feel it's hard for the likes of the Rainbow and Hotel Marvellous (as it always used to be called) seeing new places like the Captain's opening up just opposite and doing so well and potentially taking some of their customers away.

Having said this, I have been known to stagger through the hedge to the Marvellous late at night supposedly on my way home to Perry and Jimmy's.....

To anyone who hasnt tried The Captains, do, its a really nice friendly place, very cheap also, we couldnt believe the bill when it arrived, if i remember rightly it was about 23 euros for the both of us, that was starters, mains and 4 drinks, you get a free dessert thrown in and a shot each, we couldnt believe how cheap it was, also really nice food too, so all in all fabulous!

So i say give it a go!

I know it is silly and its your holiday but i just feel really bad if i go elsewhere and i would feel like im rubbing there nose in it if i was to sit across the road and eat!! So i will try some other taverns down the road i think this year! Im taking my mum this time so hopefully it should be fun sitting at the bar all night with Spiros and Kostas!! Plus you get 10% off your meal if you eat and stay at the marvel! Bargain!! hahaha

Thet are all trying to make a living and it must be really hard in such a small quiet place but it is lovely and hopefully if mum likes it word will go around and will bring more custom for them all. xxxx

Gemmalou....We Have stayed at tha Marvel on three occasions  on b & b(and had a great time)....But the best part of our Holiday is eating out and choosing where we want to eat  ,,I can understand you feeling uneasy going across the road..or anywhere else ,,but  do your own thing..... The Hotels obviousley would like us to eat there all the time ..also Some people stay in a hotel and never buy a drink, but may eat all there meals there,
Anyhow have a great time at the Marvel and get Spiros a `Famouse Grouse` for me(he wont charge you..ha ha!!!)

We're currently hearing a lot of good reports about the Marvel over here. I was told, by 2 couples, that they tried to book but it was full at the time. Went in there to change a book the other day and everyone was very friendly & chatty.

Sandy - I've gone from a right hand drive car to a left hand drive, get confused as to what side of the road the Greeks drive anyway as most Coaches seem to come directly at me, and yes, one has had a small tipple.

You cheeky thing Lisa.... of course I am jealous but we will be there Monday to try it out!!  Hope you are having a wonderful time!  Sue x

I drink the rocket fuel and Mike drinks the fruity stuff!  we like to share our money around the restaurants a bit and try other places as well.  We have only been to the Brouklis a couple of times as it has been so busy.  It does seem to be the "in" place to be..

Lovely place the Marvel is .. however every where we went was lovely!  I have never felt so at home in a resort before, as I did in Arillas.

We spent most of our day times at the pool side at the Marvel and explored by night... Can't wait to go back again.

Hi Ann

We were at the Marvel the same time as you however don't think we met ,although we must have exchanged hello's  !!!!

It made me laugh your comment about the Captains as we were the same. We used to watch the place fill up from our balcony. Thinking it must be really good, but could not pluck up the courage to go as we also felt disloyal.

Glad you enjoyed your hol. Time to start planning the next one !!!!!

We were there earlier this year ( May(seems like months ago)) and found the Rainbow a really good place to eat, it's family run. Also the Captain - opposite was also very good and reasonably priced too.

Enjoy it - we did, next year we're going back with our young son.
