My 'ole kodak cannot be pointed in that direction until the new owners are pleased with the finished result and then give me the OK.

But I did manage to sneak a photo at 2 a.m. this morning!

Unfortunately you will have a longer walk for your Gyros...Steki is now along at the Canal D'Amour end of Sidari :-(

It is on the right hand side going through Canal D'Amour from Sidari.

Unfortunately he wasn't open when we left on 2nd May but he was hoping to open later that week.

Oh I hate change!

I agree with Jo, where will I get my chocolate fix, the choccy/banana crepes were yummy & who will supply my hubby with delicious mexican crepes?

I am sure the new place will be just as good (but only if they do choccy/banana crepes!!)

Sorry Jo,   ex- Helens  is still being worked on today so no news.
George is not yet open either, although I did see him outside yesterday but couldn't get off my sunbed before he disappeared :(
Hope he's open before you come.
Where Steki was is just closed, so no late night Gyros.

Val luvver, I assume you mean the shop. I thought that George was going to be renewing his dad's shop opposite Mathraki. The transformation from female unfriendly to female frenzy!  Hope he realises the business opportunity on offer and makes the supermarket into a place that women want to shop (and ogle????)

Chip off the old block, he loves women nearly a much as his ageing dad does. I suspect he is rather better at it though.

We once bought a pair of beach shoes in there, still priced in drachmas long after the euro ruined the Greek economy. I think the translation was 1 euro.

I wish George all the best of luck with his new adventure. I bet he makes a go of it.

Its such a shame that Arillas seems to be in the same boat as most British high streets, with more shops empty than open.always amazes me that Arilla Inn was allowed to fall into disrepair like it has, whatever may have gone on.such a shame to see my favourite place looking so sorry for itself!

We know nothing Karen luvver until we're there in person. And then for Jen and me it's just what they tell us. Eggy could tell me that Whispers was going to be a creperie in 2012 and I would believe him. (Well that's stretching it - I never believe a word he says...)

But I don't bl**dy care. As long as our Arillas folk make money and survive - that's what I care about. Totally selfish. What would I do without my Arillas??

Y'ole s*d! Now I've got to worry about Whispers. That'll teach me to keep my mouth shut. As so many wish I would.

But wouldn't it be just bl**dy wonderful to see new life and new blood revitalise Whispers. I would have done it myself many years ago if I'd had the money.

Just bit another head off your Jelly Babies for July Eggy. At this rate there will only be Jelly Bodies left by the time they arrive in Arillas. Keep up the banter and there'll only be the box left.

Take care, will see you and Weggy soon.

Hi Phil, of course I meant the shop, it was open on the morning of the 4th but shut early.
The 5th saw George sat most of the morning outside chatting to someone, and then Bill and I walked for about an hour and intended to call in before returning to Mathraki but he had closed. So don't know if he has modernised the shop.
We left this morning at 10am but he still wasn't open.

As for Whispers, think Eggy might just be spreading tales (Or should that be ta(b)les).
Nice sign though. ;) don't you think Eggy?

Jo, the triffids have gone from inside Arillas Inn hope thats a sign.

OMG where the heck do we get a good breakfast with that stunning view???!!! Last year when we were there he was doing fantastic priced homemade food in the evening to. Gonna be alot of sad people in the mornings!!

PS where/what is Whispers?

Will be there in 23 sleeps!!!
Title: Re: Helen's Creperie/Gorgeous George's
Post by: justphil on June 22, 2011, 10:55:10 PM
jojo, we're notorious for breakfast - never till about midday, and then it's White Bread (Mythos) for me and Brown Bread (Royal Ionian real ale) for Jen. If the new chargrill doesn't do it, it will probably be after 10 but you might try marina, thalassa, horizon or graziella. We have been known to get eggs and stuff in thalassa at that time.

Whispers is opposite Armourada at the Junction with the road to San Stef etc - Mathraki, Annas Studios are up the hill. You walk past it as you head to Brouklis. It has been closed for a long time. We hear rumblings that things have been happening there. Will find out soon.... can't wait!

Hi Phil

Is Whispers on the right side of the road when walking down from Mathraki into the main part of Arillas?  We saw an unused building there last year but just can't remember the name.....

It may warrant a pair of higher heeled shoes in the suitcase if it's that close!!

jojo, can't promise the stunning view (and the seafront ;-)) but 'Captains' up past Brouklis do a totally fabulous breakfast with fried bread to DIE for!! Wahey, Brits abroad!! failing that, I have always found the spot that the Marina hotel has as being perfect, whilst taking your morning coffee with an option of self-service cereal/fruit as well as hot breakfast on offer.  Another lovely breakfast is Mirage, with a lovely view to boot as well.  Take your pick! I do know what you mean about George's place though.  Lovely food.  We always fancied one of his Sat night BBQ's but could never bring ourselves to miss the Marina Greek nights!

newbies, there are two bakeries I know. The gorgeous Athena (we call it the cake shop) is a left turn from Mathraki and up the hill towards Anna Studios and provides an incredible range of sweet, and even sweeter confections. You can sit and while away an hour or two at the tables outside. We showed them how to make a great Black Russian in 2003....

The other is along past the Rainbow on the way to Elena Stella and Tria Adelphia. Bottom of hill, left past Brouklis and just keep going. The bakery is next to a little supermarket. When we stayed at Elena Stella in Sep 2008, we had fresh bread for breakfast every day from there, in spite of our reputation....

Enjoy

Val, it is on your left when you're facing down the hill, if you turn left at the junction you find the Pizzeria next door and Brouklis. On the right it was Calypso - a very traditional taverna with gorgeous food cooked on a solid fuel range. It was one of our favourites till it closed. Had a gorgeous meal there by candlelight when there was a powercut in 2002. Of course the food was cooked on solid fuel. Halcyon days....

Thanks Phil

Had totally lost my bearings there.  Calypso sounds as though it was lovely, hopefully one day it will re-open..

We didn't visit the pizzeria last year due to daughter being lactose intolerant.  I wonder if you can just have pasta or something like that?  Normally, she would just have Pizza without cheese, but as you can imagine, it's not the tastiest meal in the world!

Val 57. We had a few meals at the pizza shop when we were there. Tony says the pizzas are really nice. I dont care for pizza but there was plenty of other choices, pasta etc. I enjoyed the souvlaki. Give it a try I,m sure you'll enjoy.

Thankyou tonynglenda

We will give it a try this year - pizza without cheese is hard enough to explain in uk restaurants so we were a bit worried about going in!

Will definitely give the other options a try!

We're bound to give it a try Jo luvver, but this year I intend to keep quiet while I'm there, and do the full blown holiday report when I'm abroad, back in Somerset. If that happens, you will see it for yourself before you see my take on it.

But the temptation to login to forum is bound to overtake me at some point, so honest opinion might emerge between sweeping Eileen and the empty glasses off the floor of Ammos, and watching Eggy beat Sandy at darts in the Bow. My money is on Sandy though.....

Ain't Arillas special?
