After the Storms

http://www.arillas.com/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=325

Arillas and the people seem to have recovered from yesterday's Storms.
It was not so bad as we have expected .
After Not having had rain for months it was for us very nice to see the nature showing i'ts power.

The beach has narrowed as expected , but the north wind that comes today and tomorrow  will hopefully bring it back to normal.

We were there and it was spectacular!  It started when we were in Efi's an hour before the taxi was due, fork lightning and thunder! what a show it was, it continued all the way in the taxi to the airport, it lit up inside the taxi, the lightning seemed to be just in front of us and the thunder directly overhead, it was deafening, to say we were terrified of the flight home is an understatement!  The skies were lit up all around the airport, very dramatic, we were all stood outside waiting to check in and  the fear was palpable! Luckily by the time the flight was taking off it had moved away, it was a bumpy ride for about half and hour.

Blimey Sharon, I bet you were wishing you had spare knickers in your flight bag :-). I like watching storms but I wouldn't fancy watching one when I was about to take off.

From Dimitris's photo, it looks like the donkey track is still OK, but I hate to think what winter storms will do to it.

Did anybody get any videos or pics of the storm?. I can remember one that Erja took a few years ago, and that was spectacular.

Fantastic light show on last night's w e b c a m shots
Darkness was transformed into light as the sea was bathed in flashes of lightning.

TerryW

A dramatic video here but just a pity that you can't hear the thunder very much.

I' ve never heard thunder so loud, it rattled my teeth!
Terry, I used Billy's ;)
That video is just how it was!

I have a little glimpse of the storm over the mountains in my 2009 video and yes, spectacular it was too :)

Looks like we were very lucky having flew home at lunchtime on monday 19th after 14 days of non stop sunshine from sunrise to sunset. The record was 8.5 hours on the north beach.(biggest decision of any day was shall we eat tonight).

In 1994 I was on the last flight out of Corfu as a big storm hit. As we got into the air we flew into the clouds and all around was lightning. Then as the plane climbed there was an almighty flash and you could see elecricity/static dancing along the wing towards the cabin. It was the most awsome thing I have ever seen. It almost seemed alive.

Jesus christ Gazcaz think I would be one my knees praying to the lord above, nevermind enjoying the show!!!

Ditto Jo,  I love watching thunder storms but don't think I want to be on a plane in the middle of one. Lol

The love affair continues.

Don't want to sound boring but I looked into the effect of lightning on an aircraft. They are most vulnerable on the ground because they are 'earthed'. After take off they become 'insulated' by the surrounding air and the fuselage takes on the form of a conductor, so a lightening 'strike' will 'flow' through it and re emerge and continue it's path. The phenomenon is called 'the Faraday cage effect', where the charge is restricted to the outermost surface, so the cabin and contents are not affected.
